JA in a Day

Yesterday, I did my volunteer work for Junior Achievement (JA). I was nervous at first; but once I got in the classroom and started the lessons, everything went smooth.

The kids were great and we learned all about Families and how families work together to help one another. We learned about how important education was in order to learn skills and go to college. We learned about what jobs are and how jobs help us with our needs and wants.

It's funny how kids perceive needs and wants. Yes, they were only 1st graders; but they were cute. I showed them various pictures and ask if the picture was a need or want. They grasped the concept of I need that, I want this; but it was comical. I held up a picture of a TV and one little boy said, "We need a TV because my mom's boyfriend took ours". Funny, yes; but sad too.

The school I taught at was an Inner-City school and it was sad, in a way, because when we went over jobs that their parents did; most didn't work and some worked fast food.

Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with fast food; at least they have jobs and are trying to make it for the families. I worked fast food once in my life too.

Anyway, I had a great time and plan on volunteering again next Friday at another school. JA came around and took a picture of you and your class. I'll post the picture later on.

If you've never volunteered before, try it if you have the time. It's very rewarding and it gives something back to your community.
